Kevin Cooney, 63, of Sykesville, died Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Master’s Haven Assisted Living in Finksburg. Born July 30, 1958 in Baltimore, he was the son of the Lois Richardson Cooney and the late Edward Cooney, Sr. He was the former husband of the late Kay A. Cooney who died September 9, 2012. They had been married for 20 years. Kevin was one of the founders and owners of the Original Canopy Restaurant. Prior to that he had worked a various restaurants learning the food business. He and his partner ultimately owned 17 Canopy restaurants throughout Maryland. He also enjoyed playing video games, socializing, golfing and outdoor activities. He was also a gun enthusiast. He is survived by daughters Amanda Cooney, Joy Loraw and her husband Jason, son Jeremy Cooney and his wife Kristin, sister Catherine Phipps, brothers Brian, Bob, Jerry and Greg Cooney and grandchildren Zoey and Lia Loraw and Camden and Piper Cooney. He was preceded in death by brothers Denny and Edward Cooney, Jr.. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 18 from 11:00 AM -12:30 PM at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, Maryland where a funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family requests masks or facial coverings be worn during the visitation and funeral service. In lieu of flowers, sympathies may be expressed in the form of contributions to Guide Dogs of America, 9000 Machinists Pl, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.
