Joseph Michael Niland

Joseph Michael Niland, Sr. 87, of Sykesville, died Thursday, November 13, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born March 9, 1938 in Cumberland, Maryland, he was the son of the late Leo and Norine (Will) Niland. He was a devoted husband to Joan M. Niland. They had been married for 28 years. Joe was the District Public Defender in Prince George’s County. Even well after retirement, he maintained a keen interest in legal study. He was a U.S. Army veteran in the 82nd Airborne. Wood carving, playing golf, reading about American history, and participating in outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing and hiking, were some of his hobbies. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he was an avid Terps fan, in addition to following his other favorite sports teams. Travel played a significant role in his life as well. He traveled to 3 countries and 26 states with his wife, Joan. Among his many passions, Joe looked forward to time in the mountains outside of Cumberland, where he built a cabin on an 8-acre parcel. He spent time there whenever possible enjoying time with family and friends. This place created a special connection with his wife, Joan, and to his Appalachian roots. In addition to his wife Joan, Joe is survived by children Joseph M. Niland, Jr., James J. Niland, Elizabeth L. Franzoso, Diana B. Niland, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings Francis Niland, Mary Wolfe, Judy Mahoney, and Dennis Niland. The family will receive friends from 1-3PM on Saturday, November 22 at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg. Inurnment will be private.
