Hatte Mae (Bell) Barnes Obituary

Hattie Mae Barnes, 95, of Sykesville, Maryland and formerly Lumberton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Accent Hospice Care surrounded by the love of her family and with her son, Verlyn, by her side.


Born on May 23, 1931, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Hattie was the daughter of the late Reverend Charles H. Bell and Hattie E. Sampson Bell. She was the devoted wife of the late Carlton Barnes, who passed away on June 28, 2008. Together, they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage.


In addition to her parents and husband, Hattie was preceded in death by her son, Pastor Ronald Barnes. She was also the last surviving member of her family of twelve siblings. Hattie is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Connie Taylor and her husband, Roger; her son, Verlyn Barnes and his wife, Karen; and her cherished grandchildren: Kimberly Barnes; Nicole Barnes Frost and her husband, Henry; Crystal Barnes Pearson and her husband, Andrew; Chad Butler and his wife, Jessica; Matthew Barnes and his wife, Keri; and Steve Browning and his wife, Mary.


She also leaves behind her treasured great-grandchildren: Desmond Pearson, Victoria Pearson, Emma Barnes, Ryan Driscoll, Joshua Frost, Noah Frost, Andrew Frost, Dylan Frost, Austen Butler, Madison Butler, Bailey Barnes, Brooks Barnes, and Neveah Wells; as well as her great-great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Driscoll and Malachi Driscoll.


Hattie retired as a factory supervisor with Life-Like Products Company. Her greatest joy in life was her faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved attending church, serving the Lord, and traveling with the senior group from her church. She was also a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe.


In addition to her immediate family, Hattie is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who will cherish her memory.


The family will receive friends on Monday, July 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Saddletree Church of God,1508 Rennert Road, Lumberton, NC 28360.


A funeral service celebrating Hattie's life will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Saddletree Church of God. Interment will follow at Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
