In loving memory of Alan Edward Schenkelberg, a devoted father, grandfather, husband, and retired lieutenant of the Baltimore County Fire Department. Alan, 81, was born on June 1, 1942, in Sykesville, Maryland. He passed away on January 19, 2024, at Carroll Hospital in Westminster, Maryland surrounded by his loving family.
Alan’s unwavering commitment to service was reflected by his time with the U.S. Army and his career with the Baltimore County Fire Department. Alan served in the Army from 1959-1962 and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War era where he was an Assistant Squad Leader with the U.S. Army‘s 24th Infantry Battalion from 1960-1962. Over his 27-year career with the fire department, he was stationed at numerous locations; including, Engine 4 in Catonsville, Maryland; Station 5 in Halethorpe, Maryland; and Station 2 in Pikesville, Maryland. Beyond his commitment to service to his country and community, he found joy in reconnecting with fellow former firefighters and exchanging stories of their shared experiences.
His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life, as Alan was well-known for his generosity, compassion, and selfless willingness to help others in need. Oftentimes, Alan helped friends and family without being asked - a behavior that reflects the depth of his character and the positive impact he had on the lives of the people he touched.
An avid sports fan, Alan enjoyed watching and also playing baseball and football, and finding fellowship in the camaraderie of family and friends. His spiritual journey was reflected in his membership at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church.
Alan is survived by his wife, Marion Alice Schenkelberg, and leaves behind a legacy through his son Kristopher Schenkelberg, daughter Charlene Jones, son-in-law Jeffrey Jones, and grandchildren Noah Platte-Schenkelberg and Jacob Jones. He also leaves behind two nephews, Joey and Jamie Bunner. He was preceded in death by his mother, Estelle Schenkelberg Newman, and his sister, Dorothy Bunner.
Alan’s memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him. He will be missed.
