Michael Chase Shelton

Michael Chase Shelton, 70, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Carroll Dove House following a heroic struggle with cancer. Born April 11, 1947 in Ashland, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Winston Blackwell and Martha Jane Chase Shelton. He was the loving husband of Catherine Jeannette Shelton. They were college sweethearts and were married for over 46 years. Michael graduated from college with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology and Human Relations. Upon graduation, with a draft number of 14, he joined the Navy and was a US Naval Aviator, flying the A6 Intruder. He spent a total of 30 years with the United States Navy, that included active duty and reserves, retiring as a Navy Captain. In 1975, after serving 5 years of active duty, Michael changed his path focusing on a career in the financial service profession. He spent nearly 20 years in the corporate side of the profession then elected to concentrate his talents on the retail side. He had been active in the profession having served as the President of the Baltimore of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and the President of the Baltimore Chapter of Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP). He was awarded the prestigious Helen C. Hottenbacher Service Award in 2005 for his leadership and service to the profession. Additionally, he was involved with the Masonic Lodge and was the Past Master of Pentalpha Masonic Lodge 194 AF & AM in Germantown, Maryland. He served with the Grand Lodge of Maryland as a Senior Grand Deacon and Deputy Grand Inspector. Michael was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Boumi Shriners. Becoming a grandfather rekindled his love for the Boy Scouts. In his youth, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Michael enjoyed Scouting with his grandson and was the Carroll County District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) servicing 12,000 kids in Carroll County. Though Michael spent his life in service of others, his greatest joy was his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Courtney Shelton Alford, her husband Guy F. Alford lll (Tarhy), grandson Chase Alford and granddaughter Alexa Alford. He is also survived by C.F. Shelton (Uncle Buck) of Catonsville, MD; Sister-in-law Nancy Bollinger-Jones, Sister-in-law Sondra Clarke, her husband Wayne, Sister-in-law Janice Redding, her husband Doug, Brother-in-law Jeffrey Bollinger, Mother-in-law Jean Bollinger and numerous nieces and nephews. All of Westminster, MD. He was predeceased by his Father-in-law, Francis L. Bollinger. According to Michael’s wishes, funeral services and interment will be private.
