Ronald Harry Espy

Ronald Harry Espy, 97, died Tuesday February 16, 2016 at Carroll Lutheran Village. Born May 29th 1918 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Jane and his daughter Suzanne. He was a long time resident of Randallstown and Eldersburg, Md and for the past 14 years, lived at Carroll Lutheran Village. He was an active member of the Wards Chapel UMC. He was a 1941 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in and a minor in metallurgy. He was a life long employee of the Armco Steel Corporation, now AK Steel, where he was a senior metallurgical research engineer. He held 16 patents for developing various stainless steel alloys. During World War II he spent his service in Los Alamos, New Mexico as part of the Manhattan Project, working on the development the Atomic Bomb that eventually was used to end the war. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania, a Master Mason and a Member of Hiram Lodge No 616, Altoona, Pa. He also was a member of the American Welding Society and the American Society of Metals. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid golfer. He had his first and only hole in one at Mystic Rock, Nemacolin, Pa when he was in his late 80’s. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn of Towson, Md. and son and daughter in law, Ron and Ginger Espy of Bishopville, Md., grandchildren Caroline and Cole, numerous nieces and nephews and a devoted friend, Betty Littleton. Services will be held on Saturday February 20th in the Krug Chapel at Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster, Md. Visitation at 10:00 AM, Services at 11:00 AM with reception to follow. Private interment will be held Monday at Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the Wards Chapel UMC 11023 Liberty Rd, Randallstown, MD 21133 or Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St Luke Cir, Westminster, MD 21158.
