Garry Rumbaugh Obituary

Garry Lee Rumbaugh, 80, of Westminster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at The Carroll Dove House. Born April 17, 1937 in Friendsville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Kathryn Holsopple and Henry “Jack” Rumbaugh and his late stepfather Sheldon “Cap” Holsopple. He was the devoted husband of Patricia Sanner Rumbaugh, they were married for over 60 years. Garry graduated from North High School in Hagerstown and the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore. He designed and created beautiful jewelry for over 30 years. His handmade furniture and woodworking was masterful. Along with his creativity, he displayed leadership in his neighborhood, as president of TLRCC in Towson, Md. During this time, he was very active in cycling, acting as District Representative for Maryland and Delaware. He promoted many cycling events. Garry moved to Carroll County in 1987 and began to work as a builder and real-estate agent. Additionally, he spent many countless hours converting the Old Deer Park Church into the charming Smallwood Shoppe for Antiques. Garry was also an inventor and has obtained 6 patents. He was also a firm believer in exercise and was a member at Merritt Athletic Club for the past 10 years. Garry holds the world record for doing 6,179 crunches in one hour on his 80th Birthday and worked up to over a million crunches per year for the last several years. Garry had such a passion for beautiful things which led to his expressions in paintings and photography. His appreciation of antiques, collectables, history and his strong love of the past had a great influence on his family to encourage them to follow in his footsteps. He was extremely proud of his successful family and took great pride and joy in extolling their accomplishments. Garry was also proud of the many families he and his wife Pat, had helped to obtain their goal of property ownership in real-estate. One family in particular; are the owners of the Zumbrun Funeral Home. Garry and Pat were instrumental in helping them in acquiring the location where they have been located for the past 21 years. In addition to his wife, Garry is survived by son Todd Rumbaugh and his wife Anne of Santa Cruz, California; daughter Tolly Peddicord and her husband Al of Eldersburg; grandsons Max and Jack Trumper of Eldersburg, Phoenix Rumbaugh of Santa Cruz, sister Penny Hill and husband Terry of Hagerstown, his loving pet dog Onyx and numerous nieces and nephews. Garry was preceded in death by sisters Patricia Holsopple and Susan Ritz. The family will be celebrating Garry’s life on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg, MD. They welcome all to join them that day at 3:00 PM for a memorial service in his honor with a reception to follow.
